Benue State Chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in a statement yesterday condemned a “thank-you tour” by Governor Hyacinth Alia to the Sankera axis of the State which is planned to begin today. Several settlements in the area recently came under attacks by suspected Fulani bandits during which several persons were killed and many went missing. The statement, signed by Agile Ordedoo Bem, the party's state Publicity Secretary in Benue State and dated 23/08/2026 condemned the tour, describing it as a mockery, wondering why the "Governor and his party failed to visit Sankera when its people were attacked and loved ones brutally killed, but have now swiftly organised what appears to be a political jamboree in the same community." The party said it would not fold its arms and watch public funds being diverted to political activities at a time when the state is yearning for development across virtually every sector. According to the NDC, the APC-controlled administration led by Governor Alia has failed the people of Benue and should prepare to leave the stage rather than resort to what amounts to a brazen misuse of the state’s commonwealth for partisan political activities. The statement stressed that state resources should be prioritised for the payment of pensions and gratuities, provision of basic amenities such as water and electricity, improvement of healthcare, education and security, rather than on what it described as irrelevant political gatherings. "The NDC therefore calls on well-meaning citizens of Benue State to shun the programme, which the party believes is insensitive to the plight of a grieving population and amounts to a mockery of the victims of insecurity and their families", and urged the Governor to focus on addressing the pressing challenges confronting the people of Benue rather than using public resources to advance narrow partisan interests.
