Deputy Spokesperson of the 10th House of Representatives Philip Agbese has drawn vitriolic attacks from a cross section of Nigerians over his comments condemning former vice President Atiku Abubakar's relentless efforts to get to the truth behind President Tinubu's drug allegations in the United States. Agbese recently described Atiku's relentless pursuit of the President's drug trafficking case records with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, as going beyond 2027 politics. In the statement, Agbese, an opposition lawmaker from Benue State, noted that the President's drug accusation could affect Nigeria’s image abroad, and argued that political disagreements ahead of the 2027 presidential election should not be pursued at the expense of the reputation and well-being of Nigerians living, working and doing business outside the country. “This has gone beyond politics", the statement averred. "When desperate politicians begin to export their political battles and package Nigeria as a country whose leadership is allegedly built around criminality, they are not hurting President Tinubu alone. They are damaging the image of every Nigerian who travels, studies, works, does business or seeks opportunities abroad. “Political competition is legitimate, but there must be a line that every responsible politician must refuse to cross. You cannot spend your time telling the world that your own country is being led by criminals simply because you want to defeat the person in power,” he stated. A cross section of respondents to Abese's commemta however condemned the lawmaker, accusing him and other House members for tolerating the President's excesses even as far back as when late legal luminary Gani Fawehinmi consistently challenged his credentials when he sought the governorship of Lagos State. Other commentators accused Agbese of, along with other members, protecting Tinubu who is 'sitting on a criminal mandate, singing his praises; very shameful.' Another respondent described Agbese as an ineffectual representative whose only achievement is to 'wear Tinubu's captivity cap' ehile thousands of his constituents are being killed, sacked from their fatherland and forced to live in IDP Camps, and described the lawmaker as 'a disgrace' to the national assembly.
